A group of computer researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication , Information Processing , and Ergonomics , Germany , has just unveil their research about the possible spread of computer malware by air . The researchers have even had a kind of prototype of malware capable of infecting a PC without having to connect to a computer network though .
The method developed by these researchers is to utilize high -frequency audio waves to transmit data between 2 different PC places . This study also successfully send data between PC within about 65 feet or about 20 meters . In its development , this distance can be extended with mesh method , each computer transmits the same data to another computer nearby.
" In the article we explained how the complete concept of the air gap can be considered as a communication medium by the laptop 's internal microphone and speakers through them , " said Michael Hanspach , one of the researchers of this prototype . Michael added that through the medium of air is an information can be spread through infected mesh network , then connected to a computer network that is isolated .
The experiment was conducted involving two computers Lenovo T400 . By default both the speaker and microphone laptop was assisted by a special application that was used to transmit the data through the medium of water , the researchers managed to transmit data over the air to do some modifications .
Although there are no reported cases of transmission of malware through the air , but the researchers suggest several steps to avoid this , is to turn off the PC speakers and microphone when not in use or using some sort of audio filters that block the transmission of data via high frequency .
